Creating Our Own Solar System

The Monday after we went to the Planetarium Thayne comes into our room first thing in the morning and starts spouting off information about how Planets are stars in the sky and other advanced information. Corey and I looked at each other with a "what in the?" look. We only spent a maximum of 20 min. at the Planetarium and most of the time they were not even looking at the displays. So we asked him if he had a dream about stars and planets and he said yes. Ever since then he has been fascinated with the solar system. So that day Corey did some "learning time" with the boys all about our solar system and they watched some videos on the Internet. Then he took them to Wal-Mart to find a build your own solar system kit. When he came home we did a Family Home Evening lesson on the creation of the world and then painted our planets it was really fun. we first painted the styrofoam balls with silicone to help give it texture and prevent us from having to paint them more than once or twice.

I love art projects with the boys, but I am a big believer in having them paint in their underwear
They loved this project and now the planets are hanging in their room and everyday they talk about them. Especially Evan first thing he does when he wakes up from his nap or in the morning is point to the planets and either says "rocks" or "nets".
